Jobs Description

Responsible for oversight of all non-social enrichment for all species housed at the site. Including, but not limited to ordering produce, enrichment foodstuffs, and enrichment devices for all animals maintained on site.
Ensure appropriate enrichments to the animals’ structural and social environments and provide opportunities for species-typical activities.
Promote and execute a proactive enrichment program focused on preventing abnormal behaviors.
Oversee and coordinate animal behavioral health and provide care for animals needing special attention and/or treatment
Evaluate new enrichment devices and strategies for individually and socially housed animals
Provide training and expertise for socialization of mature male animals
Work with other departments to coordinate animal psychological/behavioral enrichment, including the acclimation and socialization of animals.
Train on positive reinforcement techniques for common tasks (e.g. entry of NHPs into catching tunnels; habituations)
Work closely with the veterinary and animal care staff to ensure proper animal care standards are maintained.
Train on advanced dam / infant care and introduction skills
Oversee the schedule of activities for the behavior team
Research and review current literature regarding animal behavior and environmental enrichment as assigned.
Assist with the revision of the Behavioral Management Program and relevant SOPs as needed to ensure accordance with the Animal Welfare Act and accepted professional standards.
Write Behavioral management Program reports to the IACUC, management or sponsors as required
Routinely handle animals as required for duties.
Maintain and track data related to social housing, exemptions to social housing, and abnormal behavior.
Monitor documentation for the Behavioral Management Program.
Train staff and other site personnel on aspects of animal behavior and enrichment as needed.
Participate in personnel actions including hiring and promotions
May be needed to provide support in other veterinary groups
May serve as IACUC committee member.
Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Jobs Requirement

General Equivalent Degree GED + 5 years experience + online accredited behavior course or Bachelors degree (preferred) +5 years experience or Associates degree (A.S. or equivalent in scientific related discipline +5 years experience
5+ years related experience in animal science, biology, chemistry/pharmacy, or similar lab environment or must have fully satisfied technical and experience requirements for the previous level.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
AALAS certification at the LAT level
Demonstrated advanced technical and analytical skills. Effective communication and leadership skills. Ability to handle Non Human primates. Proficient in technical skills and the operation of data collection equipment. Knowledge of regulations and guidelines relating to the care of laboratory animals required. Understanding of basic, intermediate, and complex Non-Human primates care and management. Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines. Computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
