Jobs Description

  • Evaluate enrichment devices for the animals’ structural and social environment and provide opportunities for species-typical activities.
  • Oversee and coordinate the behavioral observation of animals and the reporting of behavioral abnormalities.
  • Perform, refine or develop behavioral assessments in response to reports of behavioral abnormalities.
  • Work with and provide guidance to supervisory staff in preparation for regulatory inspections; resolve audit findings and oversee client interactions in regards to behavioral requirements.
  • Ensure that effective communication, and training is maintained within the organization in order to address and uphold proper animal care standards.
  • Assist and participate in coordinating animal support activities across business subsegments.
  • Develop core animal behavioral competencies for the animal technical staff in conjunction with department management, veterinary, and training staff.
  • Collaborate with the veterinary staff to evaluate and recommend improvements in animal care and behavioral standards to include implementation of programs and treatments for animals needing special attention.
  • Report findings of daily quality assurance screening to Veterinarian and department management and define and implement appropriate enhancements.
  • Revise and update the “Behavior Section” of the AAALAC program.
  • Ensure ordering of animal supplies and equipment is within the established budgetary guidelines.
  • Monitor behavioral trends and assess preconditioned animal needs to coordinate the staffing and equipment requirements to meet special animal requirements.
  • Develop, analyze, and present behavioral observation trends and implement appropriate enhancements
  • Research and review current literature regarding animal behavior and environmental enrichment.
  • Manage activities of assigned group(s) to ensure optimum performance of the group/function.
  • Responsible for personnel management activities such as: scheduling, personnel actions (hiring, promotions, transfers, etc.), training and development, providing regular direction and
  • feedback on performance, disciplinary actions and preparing and delivering annual performance and salary reviews.
  • Assist in the development of short- and long-range operating objectives, organizational structure, staffing requirements and succession plans.
  • Assist in the development and recommendation of departmental budget and authorize expenditures.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of departmental training programs, including orientation.
  • Ensure adherence to pertinent regulatory requirements and to departmental policies, practices and procedures [SOPs, safety procedures and biosafety protocols].
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Jobs Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) or equivalent in a related field.
  • 5 years related experience in laboratory animal resources. Experience working directly with animals. Experience working in a GLP and/or regulatory controlled environment required. Prior supervisory/management experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
  • AALAS certification and/or Certified Manager of Animal Resources certification (CM/CMAR) or equivalent preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of regulations/guidelines relating to the care of laboratory animals including facility inspection, procurement and distribution of laboratory animals. Knowledge and understanding of animal care and welfare standards as defined by AAALAC, USDA, etc. Computer literate. Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills. Strong management, organizational, and communication skills.
